Private Label vs. Contract Manufacturing: What's the Difference?

Brands new to the supplement industry often use “private label” and “contract manufacturing” interchangeably. They’re related, but choosing the right one shapes your timeline, cost, and how much control you have over your formula.

Private Label

You select from a manufacturer’s existing catalog of ready formulations — like Healthwise™’s 99 SKUs — and apply your own branding, packaging, and labeling. This is the fastest path to market: the formula is already developed, tested, and in some cases already produced at scale, so you’re mainly deciding on packaging, minimum order quantity, and lead time.

Best for: brands entering the market quickly, testing demand for a category before investing in a custom formula, or building a broad catalog without a large upfront R&D budget.

Contract Manufacturing

You bring your own formula — or work with the manufacturer’s R&D team to develop one — and the factory produces it exclusively for you, under your specifications. This gives you full control over ingredients, dosage, and positioning, but takes longer: formulation, sampling, and approval cycles typically run several weeks to a few months before full production begins.

Best for: brands with a specific formulation vision, a differentiated ingredient story, or regulatory requirements that off-the-shelf formulas don’t meet.

They’re Not Mutually Exclusive

Many brands do both: launch fast with 3-4 private label SKUs from an existing catalog while a custom formula is developed in parallel through contract manufacturing. A manufacturer that offers both — private label catalog access and full contract manufacturing with R&D support — lets you make that call per-product rather than committing your whole catalog to one model.
